Mastering the Autocue: How to Deliver Flawless Presentations
Welcome to Free Autocue. Whether you are recording a YouTube video, delivering a high-stakes Zoom presentation, or practising a keynote speech, an autocue is your best tool for staying on track. However, reading a script without sounding like a robot takes a bit of practice. Here are the top tips for looking natural on camera while using an autocue.
1. Position Your Camera Correctly
The golden rule of autocue use is camera placement. Place your webcam, smartphone, or camera lens directly behind or as close to the scrolling text as possible. This ensures you maintain direct eye contact with your audience. If you look too far below or above the text, viewers will immediately be able to tell that you are reading a script.
2. Format Your Script for Readability
Do not just paste a massive wall of text into the autocue. Break your script into short, easily digestible paragraphs. Use the bold, italic, and underline formatting tools in our editor to highlight key emphasis words or pause points. These visual cues help you inject natural vocal variety and emotion into your delivery.
3. Dial in Your Speed
The most common mistake beginners make is setting the scroll speed too fast and rushing to keep up. Use the live adjustment sliders to set the scroll speed so it matches your natural, conversational speaking pace. It is always better to pause and let the text catch up to you than to sound out of breath trying to chase the words up the screen.
4. Practise Makes Perfect
Always do a "dry run" before hitting the record button. Read the script out loud exactly as you plan to present it. You will quickly notice if certain sentences are too long, or if the phrasing feels unnatural to say out loud. Edit your script directly in the Free Autocue editor until it sounds just right.
